Annika rang up orders faster than either Stacy or Lisa could make them. Main Street Java was at capacity and people kept coming. What would she do? The roar in the shop gave her a headache, and the night was just starting. The clock said ten to seven. People leaned against walls and didnât even seem to mind there was no place to sit.
She handed Stacy the order, then turned to the next person in line. âBryan. Youâre back. My goodness, you did a phenomenal job spreading the word about tonight. We are bursting at the seams.â
âYeah, about that. You canât let any more people in here. Itâs too hazardous, and against the law.â He motioned toward the maximum occupancy sign on the wall.
She gasped. Bryan could shut her down with one phone call, but he was her friend. He wouldnât do that, but still . . . âHow am I supposed to keep people out?â She looked at the sea of bodies and couldnât imagine one more person fitting in. Bryan was right. It was hazardous.
âPut a sign on the door that youâre at capacity and no one else may enter.â
âBut thatâs impossible. People will come in anyway.â
âNo, they wonât. Iâll take care of it.â
âYou donât have to. Itâs my store, my job.â She started to motion to Lisa to take over the register, but Bryanâs words stopped her.
âFriends help each other. Whoâs emceeing?â
âIâd planned to, but I hadnât counted on being so busy.â
âLet me call in reinforcements, then Iâll emcee.â He pulled his phone from his pocket, resting his gaze on her. âThat is, if you donât mind.â
âPlease. Iâd be crazy to turn down the help. Thanks!â
The crowd noise increased as seven oâclock neared. She needed to do something to calm everyone anxious for the entertainment to begin, and she knew of only one way to do that. She scanned the crowd for Bryan, but couldnât find him anywhere.
Here goes nothing. âStacy, youâre in charge.â
âHuh? Whatâs going on?â
Annika took off her apron then walked onto the stage where sheâd placed her personal keyboard. Just because she had issues with her motherâs music career didnât mean she wasnât a musician of sorts herself. After all, a person couldnât grow up in the same house with Penelope Rush and not have some musical ability.
She flipped the power switch to the microphone at the keyboard. âHi there.â She kept her tone upbeat. âThanks for coming out for Main Street Javaâs grand re-opening.â The crowed hushed. âItâs been quite a day and far exceeded my expectations. While weâre waiting on the emcee, I thought Iâd get us started with an old favorite. But before I do, I wanted to make you aware of Second Chance Shelterâs event in July. The shelter recently lost its main source of funding and is hoping to raise the money to cover the difference. If youâre interested in helping or purchasing tickets let me know.â She looked at a conglomeration of familiar and unfamiliar faces and wondered what had possessed her to jump onto the stage.
