Annika rang up orders faster than either Stacy or Lisa could make them. Main Street Java was at capacity and people kept coming. What would she do? The roar in the shop gave her a headache, and the night was just starting. The clock said ten to seven. People leaned against walls and didn’t even seem to mind there was no place to sit.

She handed Stacy the order, then turned to the next person in line. “Bryan. You’re back. My goodness, you did a phenomenal job spreading the word about tonight. We are bursting at the seams.”

“Yeah, about that. You can’t let any more people in here. It’s too hazardous, and against the law.” He motioned toward the maximum occupancy sign on the wall.

She gasped. Bryan could shut her down with one phone call, but he was her friend. He wouldn’t do that, but still . . . “How am I supposed to keep people out?” She looked at the sea of bodies and couldn’t imagine one more person fitting in. Bryan was right. It was hazardous.

“Put a sign on the door that you’re at capacity and no one else may enter.”

“But that’s impossible. People will come in anyway.”

“No, they won’t. I’ll take care of it.”

“You don’t have to. It’s my store, my job.” She started to motion to Lisa to take over the register, but Bryan’s words stopped her.

“Friends help each other. Who’s emceeing?”

“I’d planned to, but I hadn’t counted on being so busy.”

“Let me call in reinforcements, then I’ll emcee.” He pulled his phone from his pocket, resting his gaze on her. “That is, if you don’t mind.”

“Please. I’d be crazy to turn down the help. Thanks!”

The crowd noise increased as seven o’clock neared. She needed to do something to calm everyone anxious for the entertainment to begin, and she knew of only one way to do that. She scanned the crowd for Bryan, but couldn’t find him anywhere.

Here goes nothing. “Stacy, you’re in charge.”

“Huh? What’s going on?”

Annika took off her apron then walked onto the stage where she’d placed her personal keyboard. Just because she had issues with her mother’s music career didn’t mean she wasn’t a musician of sorts herself. After all, a person couldn’t grow up in the same house with Penelope Rush and not have some musical ability.

She flipped the power switch to the microphone at the keyboard. “Hi there.” She kept her tone upbeat. “Thanks for coming out for Main Street Java’s grand re-opening.” The crowed hushed. “It’s been quite a day and far exceeded my expectations. While we’re waiting on the emcee, I thought I’d get us started with an old favorite. But before I do, I wanted to make you aware of Second Chance Shelter’s event in July. The shelter recently lost its main source of funding and is hoping to raise the money to cover the difference. If you’re interested in helping or purchasing tickets let me know.” She looked at a conglomeration of familiar and unfamiliar faces and wondered what had possessed her to jump onto the stage.
